Remember the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral on the internet and managed to raise over $220 million in donations in the process? Well, now there’s the chilli challenge—and this time it’s raising money for ME/CFS.
Participants film themselves eating the hottest chilli pepper they can get their hands on, or perhaps a mouthful of hot sauce, and then nominate five other people to face the heat or donate to ME/CFS research funds instead. Many people are doing both, and some of the resulting videos are hilarious to watch.
Some ME/CFS patients who are unable to participate in the challenge due to dietary restrictions are instead choosing to post videos describing their personal experience of the illness, giving friends and family members another excellent reason to donate to the cause.
If you’d like to find out more, there is an active Facebook page, as well as a website dedicated to the challenge. It’s even received a write-up in the Huffington Post. And, if chilli really isn’t your thing and you’d just like to donate money, you can help raise awareness of ME/CFS by donating to Emerge Australia.
